Southern Heritage Classic 2019

The annual Southern Heritage Classic is, in my opinion, the best time of the year in Memphis. Alums, fans and everyone in between gather at the Liberty Bowl Stadium to watch Tennessee State University and Jackson State University football players, cheerleaders, and bands. The 2019 meet-up marked the 30th anniversary of the game and I was on the sidelines for it all.

Although the bands are my favorite part, this year I saw something even better — the youngest journo on the field, Storee Elle Walton. You can read all about her and her “Grandman” in this piece from The Undefeated. Here’s a great quote from her interview:

“Photography makes me happy, and doing everything my grandman teaches me to do is so much fun,” Storee said. “The band was my favorite part. All of the people were nice, and other photographers took pictures of me.” -- Storee, The Undefeated

Whether you came for the food and stayed for the band, spent all night tailgating or even crashed a tent or two, SHC weekend is a reminder that we’re all one big family. Below are links to area coverage, as well as a gallery of my shots.
